    Understanding the new consumer consciousness

    7 min readNovember 2025

    Something has shifted

Across category after category, the same qualitative signal keeps appearing: consumers are asking more of the brands they choose — not just in terms of product performance, but in terms of what the brand stands for and how it operates in the world.

This is not the values-based consumer of previous decades, who was a niche segment. The values dimension has moved into the mainstream — and it has changed what brand trust and brand loyalty require.

What the new consciousness looks like

It is not primarily political or ideological. It is something more personal — a heightened awareness of what a purchase decision says about the consumer who makes it.

    Three shifts characterise it:

  1. From passive to active — consumers increasingly experience themselves as participants in the market rather than recipients of it
  2. From product to system — the question is not just "is this good?" but "is this made well? by whom? under what conditions?"
  3. From aspiration to alignment — brand choice has become a form of self-expression, and the expression is more values-loaded than it was a decade ago
  4. What this means for brands

It does not mean that every brand needs an activist agenda. It means that the space between what a brand says and what a brand does has become smaller — because consumers are watching, and because the tools to verify or contradict brand claims are now universal.

The brands that are navigating this shift successfully are not the ones with the most sophisticated ESG communications. They are the ones whose actual operations, culture, and decisions are coherent with the story they tell.

    The opportunity

Understanding this shift at the level of specific categories and specific consumer segments — rather than as a cultural generalisation — is where the real strategic advantage lies. The signal is real. The nuance is where the insight is.
